Marcello Girardi, a co-founder of Iloomina, a startup specializing in prototyping photonic integrated circuits based on silicon nitride, will speak at the IQT Nordics conference in June 2024. Girardi’s work, which spans the design and fabrication of low-loss photonic integrated circuits, has applications in telecommunications, sensing, and quantum technology, making him a fitting speaker for this conference.

Girardi’s educational background is rooted in physics and material science. He obtained his Bachelor of Science in Physics from Trento University and followed it with a Master of Science in Material Science from Padova University. His academic journey led him to Chalmers University, where he completed his PhD in Microtechnology and Nanoscience at the Photonics Laboratory. During his doctoral research, Girardi concentrated on designing, fabricating, and testing multilayer photonic integrated circuits for optical communication. This field is directly relevant to the advancements in quantum technology.

At Iloomina, Girardi is involved in pioneering work in the realm of photonics, a critical area in quantum technology. Photonic integrated circuits are essential for various applications, including developing quantum computers and quantum communication systems. The focus on silicon nitride as a material choice is particularly noteworthy due to its favorable properties for photonic applications, such as low loss and high power handling.

In his role at Iloomina, Girardi is not just involved in the theoretical aspects of photonics but also in the practical challenges of prototyping and fabricating these intricate circuits. This hands-on experience with both the design and realization of photonic systems gives him a comprehensive understanding of the entire development process, from concept to prototype.

At the IQT Nordics conference, Girardi is expected to share insights into the latest advancements in photonic integrated circuits, focusing on their applications in quantum technology. His presentation will likely cover the challenges and breakthroughs in the design and fabrication of these circuits and their potential impact on the telecommunications and sensing sectors.
