Google Quantum AI’s Colorful Dragon

Cirq's quantum circuit visualizations might be getting an upgrade.

Google Quantum AI's Colorful Dragon
By Brian Siegelwax posted 26 May 2025

According to Dr. Zlatko Minev, Google Quantum AI may soon add color to Cirq’s quantum circuit visualizations. His Bluesky post shows an example. The Quantum Dragon isn’t a heavy user of Cirq, but this prototype looks much, much better than Cirq’s current black-and-white ASCII art visualizations.

It ain’t kosher.

I have never encountered a scientific analogy that invokes a kosher restaurant… until now. Prof. Maxim Raginsky relays a good point, though.

What does a “quantum guitar” sound like?

I’m glad you asked, because Prof. Bob Coecke has the answer. The demonstration is brief, but it’s worth a moment of your time. Stick around for the interview.

James Wootton

The Silent Dungeon Master

Dr. James Wootton, the Dungeon Master of Quantum Computing, announced that his appearance on the Physics World Weekly Podcast will be his last podcast appearance for a while. Never fear! You can re-listen to him as many times as you wish—and I highly encourage you to do so—on The Quantum Dragon Podcast.

A GPU-married Magnetometer

Quantum magnetometers have been in the news a lot in 2025, but this one from Dirac Labs is the first one I’ve seen that shows the quantum sensor not only married to control electronics, but also the control electronics married to a GPU. This link might require a Twitter account.

Quantum Computing Hardware Jigsaw Puzzle

Dr. Bob Sutor shared one of his recent slides featuring a jigsaw puzzle of quantum computing hardware technologies. He also shared a bit about how he created that puzzle and others. Fun fact: Dr. Sutor once shared how he wrote “Dancing with Qubits” (1st ed.; link is to 2nd ed.), which I used to write “Dungeons & Qubits.”

The Kalevala Dragon

Kalevala is Finland’s national epic. Its poems of creation, magic, lust, violence, and death influenced Tolkien’s Middle Earth. These days, it’s drawing parallels with Finland’s quantum ecosystem.

IQT NORDICS Has Spectacular Grand Opening at Chalmers

Over 250 registrants from around the world arrived at the opening of IQT Nordics in Gothenburg, Sweden at the Chalmers University Conference Center. The photos only tell part of the exciting opening. IQT Nordics continues to evolve with the addition of a “Norwegian” edition coming in June 2026. Additional information about the Norway event is forthcoming. Complete information about the event that took place this week in Gothenburg can be found at www.iqtevent.com.

Blink and you’ll miss him!

This 15-second video clip from WISE – The Future Festival & Think Tank shows Prof. Eduardo R. Miranda—ever so briefly—in action. His “mind-bending Quantum Computer Music Set” is listed as one of the four highlights of the event. This link might require a LinkedIn account.

Jurassic Post-Quantum Cryptography

Officially, this presentation by JP Aumasson of Taurus SA is titled “Quantum Computing Risk & Post-Quantum Crypto Standards,” but the dinosaurs steal the show. The whole presentation is well-illustrated, but representing the before-and-after of Q-Day with T-Rex and friends is inspired.

IQT News Exclusive: Zurich Instruments and Rohde & Schwarz to back the National Quantum Computing Testbed Facility in Australia

Zurich Instruments, a market leader in developing and marketing qubit control and readout electronics for quantum computers, and its parent company Rohde & Schwarz, have been selected as key partners in the National Quantum Computing Testbed Facility (NQCT) project in Queensland, Australia.

Applications for Gaussian Boson Sampling?

Thanks to Hannes Eder Öhrström for sharing this. Maybe Xanadu should dust off Borealis and plug it back in?

Zapata AI Job Seekers… only 1 left on this list!

If you were laid off by Zapata AI and would like a free listing in this newsletter, please reach out and let me know. I’ll maintain a list in The Quantum Dragon until everyone on the list has been gainfully employed elsewhere or is otherwise no longer actively job seeking. I might extend this offer to all job seekers, but I’ll start with these layoffs.

Quantum Noise Detector

Alan Ho and Prof. Michael Biercuk inspired the Resuscitated Quantum Bullshit Detector, but the original(?) has resurfaced on Bluesky. It’s back to reposting a simple “bullshit” or “not bullshit,” so The Quantum Dragon will continue to monitor for challenges, controversies, and debates under this new name from Dr. Bob Sutor.

  • All hail Jensen Huang! Too many companies are way too excited just to have a person or a logo in the vicinity of one CEO. Why? Because the next day we found out that NVIDIA is interested in investing in PsiQuantum… not in the companies excited about inclusion in a photo.
  • Craig Gidney of Google Quantum AI has lowered the resource estimate for cracking RSA-2048 to only 1,000,000 transmon qubits? Olivier Ezratty reminds us that Alice & Bob’s estimate is only 100,000 cat qubits.
