Thanks to Sarah Schupp for sharing IEEE Spectrum’s article “This Device Takes Photographs With a Single Atom: What seems like a fun physics experiment could be a quantum computing lifesaver” about research at Japan’s Institute for Molecular Science. It inspired The Quantum Dragon to befriend a rubidium-87 atom.

QuEra’s “Gemini” has native Toffoli gates.
I’ve only used QuEra’s “Aquila” analog neutral atom quantum computer because the digital “Gemini” is not yet publicly accessible, but as per “Toffoli Gate” in Chief Commercial Officer Yuval Boger’s “Quantum Bits,” Gemini can execute a 1-step Toffoli, in contrast to superconducting systems requiring more than a dozen steps.

David Mandell’s “Quantum Is No Longer Five Years Away” is a moderately long read that starts off with a bang. I have definitely edited reports mid-writing, before you’ve even had a chance to read them, because things are changing so quickly. On occasion, I’ve also edited articles and podcasts that were already scheduled for publication.

I’m not going to dignify the source post with a link, but just when you think you’ve spotted the worst abuse of “quantum” on social media, let me add for your consideration the allegation that CERN is using quantum computers to summon demons. I don’t know that it’s the worst I’ve seen, but it’s way up there.

Free Workshop on “Real-World Quantum Computing”
This 2-day workshop is in-person, which may or may not issue depending on your location, but it’s free, and it’s hosted by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and San Jose State University (SJSU). The deadline for US citizens to register is July 20. The deadline for non-U.S. citizens has already passed, sorry.

The Quantum Edge shared the headcount from a recent quantum computing course at the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), and the map of the top 15 participating countries somehow excludes all of North America and most of Europe. This link may require a LinkedIn account.

The Quantum Dragon worries about the future, not just because he’s wearing a red shirt on a Federation starship, but mostly because we’re not ready for cryptographically relevant quantum computers.

Alan Ho and Prof. Michael Biercuk inspired the Resuscitated Quantum Bullshit Detector, but the original(?) has resurfaced on Bluesky. It’s back to reposting a simple “bullshit” or “not bullshit,” so The Quantum Dragon will continue to monitor for challenges, controversies, and debates under this new name from Dr. Bob Sutor.
