(BMBF.de) A strategic initiative of Germany’s Federal Ministry of Research and the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft for Quantum Imaging and Quantum Sensing has been launched with 30 million euros. A total of eleven Fraunhofer institutes are working on the initiative to build more research knowledge and to develop application-oriented technologies for close cooperation with industry. The initiative will fund the Quantum Photonics Labs (QPL) at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering in Jena. This will create a transfer center for universally applicable quantum optical technologies.
Prof. Dr. Reimund Neugebauer, President of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, summarizes the future strategic orientation: “The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft regards quantum technologies as an important opportunity for the future of the high-tech location of Germany and Europe.”
Federal Research Minister Anja Karliczek emphasizes: “Germany wants to make use of the opportunities offered by quantum technologies and to actively shape their development. We want to bring knowledge from basic research into application.”
