Quantum Internet Alliance launches (QIA) internship program

As part of the Building for One Europe initiative, Quantum Internet Alliance (QIA) has recently launched the first call for internships for students and young professionals to be part of their mission to build the world’s first Quantum Internet.

With a goal of widening the European Quantum Internet, this internship program targets master students, PhD candidates, postdocs, or young professionals studying or working in European Union (EU) countries without a QIA partner (see list below).

“By providing access to QIA cutting-edge research facilities and resources, we aim to nurture the next generation of quantum technology experts from across Europe. The internship program aims to contribute in establishing a Quantum Internet ecosystem that include all member states,” QIA Director Stephanie Wehner noted.

Successful candidates will be hosted in Europe’s top actors in Quantum Internet to acquire practical understanding and skills in different facets of quantum technology.

This programme offers opportunities to research groups and companies based in any of the eligible countries to establish or strengthen links with the leading Quantum Internet activities in Europe.

Below are the internship opportunities available:

The Institute of Photonics Sciences (ICFO) | Barcelona, Spain

This opportunity is open to Master students active in eligible countries and will be working in the Quantum Photonics with Solids and Atoms Group at ICFO.

Successful candidate will work in developing a printed-circuit board that contains all electrical components as plug-and-play solution. S/he will acquire hands-on experience with optical elements, radio-frequency electronics, laser systems, and fibers.

University of Innsbruck | Innsbruck, Austria

This opportunity is open to Master students or PhD candidates active in eligible countries and will be working in the Quantum Interfaces Group at the University of Innsbruck.

Successful candidate will be working in integrating quantum frequency conversion into the existing two-nodes quantum network at Innsbruck. S/he will develop familiarity with a wide range of techniques in a quantum physics laboratory, including – trapping ions in ultra-high vacuum, – laser spectroscopy, – coherent control of quantum interfaces between light and matter among others.

Technical University of Dresden | Dresden, Germany

This opportunity is open to PhD candidates and young professionals active in eligible countries and will be working in the Deutsche Telekom Chair of Communication Networks at Technical University of Dresden.

Successful candidate will be working in designing a quantum protocol to synchronize the network nodes and the Mobile Edge Cloud. S/he will acquire knowledge on network synchronisation, quantum synchronisation protocols for 6G networks and quantum-classical simulation and emulation, among others.

University of Parma | Parma, Italy

This opportunity is open to PhD candidate active in eligible countries, and will be working in Distributed Systems Group at the University of Parma.

Successful candidate will be working on a research study regarding the benchmarking of distributed quantum computing (DQC) platforms. S/he will acquire knowledge on benchmarking approaches to DQC and the use of the NetQASM Software Development Kit, among others.

Delft University of Technology | Delft, the Netherlands

This opportunity is open to Master students active in eligible countries, and will be working in Quantum Computer Science at Delft University of Technology.

Successful candidate will take part in developing a test suite to test the workings of the world’s first full stack quantum network developed by QIA. S/he also learn more about the requirements of implementing specific applications on quantum hardware.

QIA will cover up to 5,000 EUR in travel and accommodation expenses for successful candidates.

Deadline for submission: 31 May 2023
