Inside Quantum Technology

Quantum Communications vs. Quantum Networking vs. the Quantum Internet

Quantum networking — its markets and the evolution of its technology — is a major focus of IQT’s New York event coming up in October (https://iqtevent.com/newyork/).  This technology presents great opportunity for everyone from new breeds of service providers and software makers to established telecommunications/data communications equipment makers.  Which is the correct term — “quantum networking” or “quantum communications?”  It seems that IQT, along with just about everyone else in quantum sector, uses these terms as synonyms.  A little investigation  shows a slight difference in usage.  “Quantum communications” is in use more in Europe and among Tier One Consulting organizations.  “Quantum communications” also seems more abstract and broader than “quantum networking.” Quantum networking seems more “physical” referring to actual optical and satellite networks.

We cannot promise complete consistency.  A much more important distinction is between quantum communications/quantum networking on the one hand and the “quantum internet” on the other.  The quantum internet is a thing of the future.  Some people see the beginning of a quantum internet in the QKD testbeds of today, others don’t.  Either way, the quantum internet will parallel the Internet of today but transmitting qubits with near perfect security and linking together QPUs and quantum sensors.

Lawrence is noted as an expert in the fields of additive manufacturing, telecom and quantum technology. He has produced over 300 research reports in all three fields and also plans programing for fall and spring IQT conferences in the USA as well internationally.
