Inside Quantum Technology

Q&A with Vincent Cert Who Says “Quantum Effects Seem to Have Edge in Next Great Information Technology Trend”

(AFCEA.org) The AFCEA* recently interviewed Vincent Cerf, vice president and chief Internet evangelist at Google who is considered by many to be one of the fathers of the Internet
AFCEA: “What do you think is the next great information technology trend?”
CERF: Quantum effects seem to have the edge. Using them produces significant gains in sensitivity and thus signal-to-noise ratio. I admit, however, that I am less excited about quantum key distribution, believing that post-quantum public key cryptography that is resistant to cracking by quantum computation may prove to be more reliable.
Additional questions addressed 5G, software, battlefield communications, etc.
AFCEA: What is the most important component capability in future communications?
CERF: A combination of higher power high frequency amplifiers in the 60-120 GHz range would offer substantial increase in available bandwidths at increasing range. At these frequencies, CDMA becomes even more attractive in terms of capacity to share common spectrum among a larger number of devices.
