MIT Engineers Build Superconducting ‘Giant Atoms’; Finding Could Lead to Enhanced Quantum Computers

By IQT News posted 30 Jul 2020

(Futurism) A team of MIT engineers have built artificial, superconducting “giant atoms” with hope that their giant atoms lead to a simpler, enhanced form of quantum computers. The scientists did this by coupling together multiple cubits-worth of regular atoms. These giant atoms are easier to control and far harder to destroy during normal operations.
Previous to this discovery, small-scale quantum processors have successfully performed tasks at a rate exponentially faster than that of classical computers. However, it has been difficult to controllably communicate quantum information between distant parts of a processor.
