Dozen Japanese Organizations Teaming to Develop Quantum Cryptography Technology

(3NHR.jp) A dozen Japanese companies and organizations are teaming up on an ambitious project to develop the next level of encryption technology, known as “quantum cryptography.”
People familiar with the plan say the group includes companies such as Toshiba, NEC and Mitsubishi Electric. The University of Tokyo and the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology are also on board.
The five-year project will explore the possibility of extending the distance over which data communications are unbreakable. It will also aim for encryption that is secure even for ultra-fast, high volume 5G networks.
The consortium aims to commercialize the technology worldwide. Japanese companies have been at the forefront of the field. Toshiba holds the most patents, followed by NEC.
